Community Helpers
This week begins our study for Community Helpers. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite community helper (doctor, teacher, fireman, policeman, chef, etc.) this Friday, September 4th. We will be walking around the school to show our first grade friends and teachers our costumes. I can’t wait to see them all dressed up!
Picture Day
Just a quick reminder that picture day is tomorrow. Please remember to send your order forms if you would like for your child to participate.
Media Center Day
Our day each week to go to the media center will be Thursday. Please be sure that your child has his/her library book in his/her backpack on Thursdays so that they will be able to check out another book.
Sight Words
Each quarter your child will have the opportunity to earn a colored bracelet for learning all of their sight words for that quarter. This quarter’s sight words are “orange” in color. Therefore, students will be working toward earning their orange bracelet this quarter. At the end of the quarter, students who have learned at least 15 of their sight words (which is a “3” on the report card) will be able to participate in the Orange Sight Word Recess Party with extra recess. Slower students will still be able to continue to work on earning their orange bracelet into the next quarter. In order to earn the bracelet all orange sight words must be learned. I will be testing sight words at the end of every month. Students who have learned their orange sight words will move on to Blue words. Blue words will be tested at the end of September and students who have mastered this list will be allowed to move to green words and so on…. I know this might seem a little confusing. If you have questions you can e-mail me at [email protected].
Baggie Books
Last week I began putting books in the Baggie Books section of your child’s Take Home Folder. These are little books that your child is to practice reading to you at home. Have your child practice reading the books each night. Even if your child “memorizes the book” seeing the words over and over will help your child to recognize the high frequency words in the book and they will become a part of your child’s sight word vocabulary. You might also have your child practice retelling what happened in the story, tell about their favorite part of the story and why, and ask them to tell you what the story reminds them of and why. These are all questions asked of your child in order to pass their reading tests so that they can move on to the next level. Please make sure that when your child is finished reading the book to you that he/she puts the book back in the Take Home Folder. Your child will receive a new book about every 3 days.
Rocket Reader
This one is probably the most important of all the homework assignments to your child just because of the opportunity for a reading medal at the end of the year. To start, you will choose books to read to your child. Record the books read on the Rocket Reader Mission Card. On the back of the card, it will ask your child questions about five of the books you read to them. Please fill out your child’s answers on the back of the mission card. This program will run for 6 months – Sept., Oct., Nov., Jan., Feb., & Mar. Please, Please have your child participate in this program. Children who participate in all six months will be awarded a Rocket Reader medal in the awards assembly at the end of the year.
Have a wonderful week!
